Rich Skillman and Bret Handy each scored 11 points as 10th-ranked Nooksack Valley held off Cashmere 39-30 on Thursday in a Class 1A boys state quarterfinal.

The win sends the Pioneers (19-7) into Friday’s 5:30 p.m. semifinal against either Toledo or University Prep.

NV shot nearly 53 percent (18 of 34) from the field, but couldn’t completely shake Cashmere (17-11), even though the Pioneers never trailed in the game.

Skillman scored seven of his points in the second half.

Drew Ross led Cashmere with eight points. Teammate Chris Mitchell pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

But the Bulldogs suffered from cold shooting, making just 26 percent (12 of 46) of their shots, including just 2 of 18 three-point tries.
