Bears head for fifth
straight title game

Brewster rolls to 48-28 victory over Meridian

Brewster will play for it all — for the fifth year in a row. That's unprecedented in any classification.

Owners of 23 state trophies and seven championships, the Bears lived up to their heritage, using a 14-2 blitz in the second quarter to open the way for a 48-28 victory over Meridian in the late semifinal Friday.

The title game is scheduled for 9 p.m. Brewster will face Toledo, which shocked favored Nooksack Valley 32-31 in overtime in Friday's early semifinal.

Brewster's defense went over 14 minutes without giving up a field goal, and Brodie McCormack showcased the Bears' depth by coming off the bench to drain three 3-pointers in the breakaway second quarter.

"Our defense was just unbelievable tonight," said McCormack, who finished 4-for-5 from long distance for a game-high 14 points. "When our defense gets stops like that, our offense just blows up."

Meridian, the tournament's feel-good story with no state ranking and 15 losses, has only one state trophy in its program. And in the first half the Trojans played like a team in awe of the rare stage.

But in the third quarter, the battle-tested team from Bellingham, which picked up most of those losses in its 3A-2A-1A league, shook itself awake and made a charge.

Down 28-7 early in the third period, the Trojans finished the quarter on a 16-4 run with scoring from four different players. Meridian had the deficit down to single digits early in the final period but the Bears, unshaken and ready with an answer, scored 14 of the game's final 17 points.

"We've had some teams sneak up on us in the second half. We knew they would make a run," McCormack said. "But we got back together on defense and started playing the way we did in the first half."

Behind McCormack, Brewster (28-0) had two other players in double figures — Rocky Gipson (12), who blocked five shots in the first half, and Clay Gebbers (10).

Andrei Lintz scored nine points for Meridian, seven off his tournament average.
