Michael Zieve scored a layup off an offensive rebound with 24 seconds left to help ensure a University Prep victory over Tonasket, 44-41, in the first round of the Class 1A boys state tournament Wednesday.

Zieve's putback came after a missed free-throw attempt by Evan Turner with 27 seconds to play. Tonasket wasn't able to get off a viable 3-point shot before the final buzzer.

Zieve scored 12 points and Turner 10 for the Pumas, who improved to 16-6.

Zieve also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds as University Prep dominated the boards, 37-24.

The Pumas trailed by as many as eight points early in the game but managed to knot the score at 22-22 at the half. Turner's putback with 6:16 to go in the third quarter broke the stalemate and put the Pumas up for good.

Jordan Wells led Tonasket with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Roy Osborne added 10 points.
