This being the weekend of that other awards
ceremony of note — you know, the one with movie stars, cleavage, the red
carpet and those red-faced acceptance speeches — we hereby present the
first annual Class 1B Dribblies, awarded for outstanding performances in
whatever categories we happen to think of.
The envelopes, please.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN A CLUTCH ROLE: To DREW HEGARTY of
LIBERTY CHRISTIAN, who hit nothing but net on his 14-footer with two
seconds remaining in the boys 3rd-place game, the week's only
game-deciding last-minute shot.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN A UNIFIED ROLE: To the INCHELIUM HORNETS,
for their refusal to leave the court after the fourth-place trophy
presentation until their senior leader — CHELSI PAKOOTAS, being
attended to by medical personnel for a sprained finger at courtside —
was able to join them at midcourt for the celebration photos.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN A HORROR ROLE (ENSEMBLE CAST): This goes to
the two teams in the girls 5th-8th place, ENTIAT and GARFIELD-PALOUSE,
who combined to shoot a combined 17-for-81 from the field (21 percent)
in the 5th-8th place game. Compared to this ugliness, the Elephant Man
was Brad Pitt.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN A NONSPEAKING ROLE: To coach DARREN
JOHNSON of LUMMI, who had to stand mutely and take it as his
Blackhawks were charged with 25 fouls to just eight for Tri-Cities Prep
in the 4th-7th place game. But despite the disparity in foul shots (32
for TCP, 6 for Lummi), the Blackhawks still had the lead in the final
two minutes before running out of gas in overtime.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN PRODUCT PLACEMENT: To the 1B community, which
over the first three days bought more than $60,000 worth of souvenirs,
mostly sweatshirts and T-shirts — more than vendors had sold at any of
the 1A or 2A tournaments at the SunDome over the past several years.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN A ROLE REVERSAL: To the ENTIAT boys,
who took the fifth-place trophy with a victory over Moses Lake
Christian, which had handled the Tigers twice in the regular season,
once by 17 points. Honorable mention goes to the COLTON girls,
who were drubbed 61-37 by Tekoa-Oakesdale in the district final but won
Saturday's rematch 45-42 in the 3rd-6th game. This doesn't earn the
Dribblie primarily because these two teams met five times this year,
with Colton winning three.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN A SUPPORTING ROLE: To AARON VAN DE GRAAF
of Sunnyside Christian, who — as the Knight girls came off the court
after losing to Sprague-Harrington — was right there with
congratulations and only positive, supportive consolation for each and
every one. This, of course, was only minutes before he and the rest of
the Knight boys would be coming onto the court for their own
championship game. Honorable mention goes to CHELSI PAKOOTAS of
INCHELIUM and GLEN "BUG" ROBERTSON of LUMMI, the
tournament leaders in assists (21 for Pakootas, 23 for Robertson).
BEST DIRECTOR: To LEON ENICK, boys coach at TULALIP
HERITAGE. Seriously now, did anybody outside of a five-mile radius
of Marysville think these state newbies would even be playing on
Saturday, much less in the championship game? Enick also gets the
Dribblie for Best Costume Design, simply because his hat is just so
cool.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN A LEADING ROLE: RONI JO MIELKE of
SPRAGUE-HARRINGTON. Her tournament numbers: 19.3 points, 3.7
assists, 5.0 steals. That girl can flat-out play the game.
BEST MOVIE: "Little Miss Sunshine." Oh, what the heck? |
