John Gage scored a team-high 17 points and Chris Pieterick added 14 as seventh-ranked Vashon Island held off a late Toledo charge to beat the Indians 55-54 in the first round of the Class 1A boys state tournament Wednesday.

Pieterick sank a free throw with 12 seconds remaining to seal the win. Toledo, which trailed by seven with fewer than three minutes to play, scored on a layup by David Wallace with three seconds left to close the scoring.

Gage had 11 points in the first half, but the Pirates (21-4) couldn't muster more than a seven-point lead before intermission. They extended the advantage to 11, 44-33, early in the fourth before Toledo (13-12) charged back.

Talon Rakoz scored 11 of his 12 points for Toledo in the final quarter to spark the comeback. David Wallace added a game-high 18 points, and Jarrod Yates also had 12 points.

The Indians scored 21 points off 17 Vashon Island turnovers. Wallace and Tony Zamorano each had three steals for the Indians.
