Like any restless coach
headed into a state basketball tournament on opening day -- and with a
10:30 a.m. tipoff for added uncertainly -- Manuel Rangel had his
concerns.

How would his White
Swan boys react? With no recent state experience to draw from and a
dangerous opponent on the floor, Rangel had good reason to be anxious
about the opening minutes of the Class 1A state tournament in the
SunDome on Wednesday.
But those pacesetting
minutes were all White Swan as the well-composed Cougars flew out to a
14-0 lead and rolled to a 59-45 victory over Lakeside in the program’s
first state appearance in three years.
Senior guard Adrian
Komaromy drained two 3-pointers from the top of the key during the
breakaway start and helped orchestrate a continuously effective
fastbreak that never allowed the Eagles to make a serious comeback.
“We were a little
nervous but everybody is before the first game,” Komaromy said. “We had
a great start and we just took it from there. We played games in here
before in the (SunDome) Shootout so we’re used it. We like to push the
ball and we like the longer floor.”
Not your typical
“bigs,” White Swan’s senior front line of Aaron Castilleja and Brady
Carl finished many of the breaks. Castilleja made 7 of 9 shots for a
game-high 14 points and Carl had eight points and seven rebounds.
“Our big guys run
better than anybody else’s,” said Komaromy, who finished with 12 points.
“They like it as much as the guards do.”
“Either way is fine
for me -- on the break or down low,” Castilleja said. “I thought we did
both real well today.”
Indeed there was
little the Cougars did wrong and the big blitz at the start was
responsible for it. Down by so much so early, Lakeside could never find
its shooting touch, missing 16 of 17 from 3-point distance and shooting
just 26.4 percent overall for the game.
When the Eagles
brought more pressure in the second half, White Swan responded from the
foul line. Guards Travis Van Pelt, Drew Blodgett and Komaromy combined
to hit 10 of 10 free throws in the final four minutes.
“I told the kids those
Shootout games will help us. It’s the same environment, the same court,”
Rangel said. “Obviously I had concerns, but we have boys who practice
hard and enjoy playing together. I hoped they would come ready to play
and they did.”
Van Pelt picked up six
assists and made all six of his free throws, and Guy Sanchey, the lone
nonsenior starter, had three steals.
Lakeside came in
having won 15 of 17 games after an 0-8 start, but the Eagles managed
just 23 points through three quarters. After 14 tries, Lakeside hit its
first 3-pointer with 2:54 left in the game.
“I always see things I
think could be better, but the defense was solid,” Rangel said. “The
boys had the intensity and effort today.”
In Thursday’s first
quarterfinal at 4 p.m., White Swan (20-5) will face seventh-ranked
Vashon (21-4), which held on to beat Toledo 55-54 in Wednesday’s 9 a.m.
opener.
