Brett Clyde scored a
game-high 22 points, and third-ranked Connell sank six of eight free
throws down the stretch to upend second-ranked King's 59-55 Wednesday in
the Class 1A boys state tournament.
Clyde made 8 of 16
shots, including 3 of 7 3-point tries. Teammates Spencer Hadley and
Lance Whitney added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
"They're a great
team," Clyde said of King's. "We thought we had them, and they just kept
coming back. Great team."
The Eagles (21-3) took
the lead for good midway through the first quarter, and eventually built
a 14-point lead in the third period before King's made a slight run. The
Knights (20-6) never got closer than the final score.
Connell took advantage
of 12 King's turnovers, converting them into 16 points.
Dylan O'Neil sparked
King's with 19 points and 16 rebounds.
"He's 6-7, our inside
guys are 6-3, and he's a great player," Clyde said of O'Neil. "But OK,
if you block out, you can rebound and score against anybody."
Nick Hardy and Alex
Mar each had 11 points for King's. Bryan Ayers added four assists and
three steals.
