No high five for
Colfax

end Colfax's four straight state championships

With both sides of the
SunDome rocking and screaming, with her team’s seemingly insurmountable
lead all but erased — a time when nerves unravel and talent is less
important than poise — Lynden Christian’s Kenzie De Boer put all of that
on hold.

It was as if she was
on a silent gymnasium, without the thousands of screaming voices in her
ear, without the Colfax Bulldogs — the tenacious terriers who have owned
the Class 1A tournament for longer than De Boer has been in high school.
She dribbled once,
stepped forward and launched the 22-foot 3-pointer that all but broke
the Bulldogs’ comeback. That basket — which came as the Lyncs’ lead had
been sliced from eight to two over 2 1/2 minutes — was the critical
score in the Lyncs’ 62-55 victory over the four-time defending 1A girls
champs.
“It was kind of like
everything paused for a second, I guess,” she said of the poise with
which she took — and swished — that 3-pointer, that pushed the lead up
to 48-43. The Bulldogs never got closer than that again.
“That was a big shot,
a big shot,” said Lync senior leader Brianne Ryan, whose 26 points — and
De Boer’s 21 — tipped the balance away in Lynden Christian’s favor.
“They were on this comeback, but right that, that stopped them.”
This was a game with
as many ebbs and flows as a week at the beach. Colfax had seemingly
taken control of the game with one of its patented runs, a 10-pointer
over the last 1:45 of the first half fueled by Jordan Harazin with a
steal, a 3-pointer and a buzzer-beating 14-footer that put the Bulldogs
up 28-19.
“We talked at halftime
about how it seemed like they were playing more aggressive than we were,
that they wanted it more,” said Lyncs coach Curt De Haan, whose 27-0
team will face Lakeside in Friday’s 9 p.m. semifinal. “We talked about
how we’ve come too far to not want it more than anybody we play. We had
to bring it all out there. It was all about who had the most heart.”
The Lyncs adjusted the
press break at halftime, enabling them to more easily advance the ball
upcourt against Colfax’s press, and also unleashed a press of their own
that paid dividends. After the Bulldogs (22-5) built their lead to
31-19, the Lyncs finally got on the scoreboard on a Ryan transition
basket, ending a six-minute, 38-second Lynden Christian scoring drought.
That basket also ignited a 16-0 Lyncs run over 6:59, part of a 22-2 that
left the Bulldogs in a 41-33 hole with just 4 1/2 minutes remaining.
“Usually when you come
back on a team that’s been ahead and you get up on them, they get
flustered,” De Boer said. “But they really did a great job of regaining
their composure. They’re a great team.”
“They didn’t quit,” De
Haan said. “A championship caliber team like that is not going to go
down easy. You’re going to take their best shot.”
And the Lyncs had to
do just that. Colfax came back with an 10-4 run, capped with a running
9-foot bank shot by Harazin, who would finish with 20 points and seven
rebounds. But then Lynden Christian came back with its own best shot —
and De Boer’s 3-pointer put the Lyncs back in control.
“In the second half,
we couldn’t make lay-ins when we were trying to initiate contact, and we
couldn’t make free throws,” said Colfax coach Corey Baerlocher. “When
that happened, we got back on our heels a little bit.
“I can’t fault the
kids’ effort. They did everything I asked them to do.”
But only until Kenzie
De Boer stopped time.
And stopped the
longest title run in state basketball history.
