Scott Smith scored a game-high 19 points and secured the win with five free throws in the final 40 seconds to lift Garfield-Palouse to a 54-48 win over Neah Bay for fourth place in the Class 1B boys state tournament Saturday.

Gavin Burt added 10 points for the Vikings, who finished at 22-5 and captured their 14th trophy in 17 state-tournament appearances.

Smith converted 11 of 15 free-throw tries, including 7 of 9 in the second half. His 31 free throws in four games set a tournament record, breaking the mark of 24 set in 2007 by Tri-Cities Prep's Matt Campbell.

On Friday, Smith set the record for most free throws made in a game, with 15. His 43 free-throw attempts is also a tournament record.

Gar-Pal led by 11 points early in the fourth quarter before Neah Bay (20-3) rallied back to cut its deficit to 49-46 with 47 seconds left. The Red Devils were forced to foul to get back the ball, sending Smith to the line each time.

Smith also had eight rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Drexler Doherty led Neah Bay with 12 points, Dominick DeBari added 11 and Robert Moss 10. Cody Bartlett and Moss each pulled down eight rebounds.
