Klickitat's return
to state goes sour
Burt leads Gar-Pal's 50-34 victory with 12 points
TOURNEYTOWN.COM
The résumés for the
Garfield-Palouse and Klickitat boys basketball teams couldn't be much
further apart:
Gar-Pal making its 18th state appearance looking for a 14th trophy and a
fourth championship against a Vandals squad returning to the big dance
for the first time since the Johnson administration.
But Klickitat acquitted itself fairly well Wednesday afternoon in the
first round of the Class 1B state tournament in the SunDome, staying
within reach of the Vikings before Gar-Pal steadily pulled away for a
50-34 victory.
"We had to get that 41-year rust off," said Klickitat coach Kirk Huwe
referring to the 1967 tournament berth that stood as the Vandals' only
until this year.
While nerves might've played a part in Klickitat's 14 turnovers and
33-percent shooting, Gar-Pal's proficiency from beyond the 3-point arc —
often well beyond the arc — also was damaging.
Gavin Burt's 4-of-9 effort from 3-point range keyed the 7-for-19 outing
for Gar-Pal. Burt was hardly bashful in his hoisting — launching several
shots from the 25-foot range — en route to a game-high 12 points.
"As much as he wants to, he can let 'er fly," Vikings coach Tim Coles
said. "And it helps us out when he does, because it stretches the
defense out and allows our penetrators to do their thing."
Nearly half of Gar-Pal's shots — 22 of 45 — fame from long distance.
"There were a couple kids that we knew that they could stretch the
defense," Huwe said.
For their part, the Vandals were up to the long-distance shootout in the
early going.
Michael McConville made two treys in the first quarter as the game's
first 12 points were scored on 3-pointers. The 5-foot-8 junior finished
with a team-high for the Vandals (11-13).
But Klickitat made just one 3-pointer after the first quarter and saw
the Vikings close the first half on a 7-0 run for a 31-19 lead at the
intermission.
The Vandals would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Jeromie Mason had eight points for the Vandals on 4-for-6 shooting
before fouling out, and Ron Prominski added six points, three assists
and three steals.
Michael Jacobs had nine points for the Vikings.
Gar-Pal, itself returning to state after a five-year absence, improved
to 20-4 and will play Moses Lake Christian, which defeated Lummi 58-55,
in a quarterfinal at 7:30 tonight.
"This is a fairly young team, and this is the year we expected to step
it up," Coles said. "These guys won league, they won a pressure game at
county, they won a pressure game at district, and now they get a win
here. They're starting to believe in themselves more and more."
The Vandals, still looking for the program's first state victory, play
Lummi at 12:30 p.m.
"We missed a lot shot we should make," Huwe said. "We'll bounce back."
