Josiah Tampien scored four of his game-high 21 points at the free-throw line in the final two minutes to lead Tekoa-Oakesdale past Cusick 56-50 in the Class 1B boys state tournament Wednesday.

Tampien’s foul shots kept the Nighthawks (17-9) ahead to stay against a determined Cusick team that trailed by seven, 44-37, with 5:57 to play. Teammate Brandon Hovde added two free throws with 40 seconds left to close the scoring.

Despite its rally, Cusick couldn’t sustain the effort in the closing minutes, and only scored one free throw in the final two minutes.

Tampien made 7 of 16 shots from the field and 5 of 7 free throws. Casey Cook added 10 points, and Hovde pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Raymond Ostlie led the Panthers (17-6) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Spencer Shanholtzer scored 12 points, and Tyler Edwards also pulled in nine rebounds.
