Trout
Lake-Glenwood's Katie Yarnell goes up for a shot past Neah Bay's
Lorraine Greene in the second half of Friday's loser-out game.

Trout Lake-Glenwood
got off to a slow start on offense, not scoring their first field goal
until almost three minutes into the game. Even when their offense
started clicking somewhat at the end of the first quarter, Neah Bay kept
them at arm’s length by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to take a 16-9
lead after the first quarter.
“Our first quarters
are usually slow,” said TLG coach Roger Huffsmith. “Then we pick it up
and usually carry it through the rest of the game.”
The Mustangs followed
this pattern against Neah Bay, starting the second quarter off with a
3-pointer from senior guard Kindra VanLaar.
Sophomore center Katie
Yarnell also began to make her presence felt, scoring back-to-back
baskets to pull TLG closer to Neah Bay.
After another VanLaar
3-pointer, Trout Lake-Glenwood tied the game at 22-22 with two minutes
to go in the half, and would go into the intermission with a 26-25 lead.
“We stayed focused, and we didn’t let it get to us,” VanLaar said. “We
tried to get into the post, and our shot was on.”
Yarnell controlled the paint as she scored 10 of her 20 points in the
first half, also grabbing 14 of her 23 rebounds in the first two
quarters.
“She played awesome,” said Neah Bay coach Lisa Halttunen. “We just tried
not to let her get the ball because she was just taking advantage of
us.”
As the third quarter began, both teams kept up the quick pace they had
set in the second quarter. The Mustangs also needed to improve their
free-throw percentage, after going 0-for-8 from the line in the first
half.
“Early in the season we were sinking our free throws,” VanLaar said.
“But we just couldn’t get them today.”
And that came back to haunt TLG in the fourth quarter as they couldn’t
make free throws to break away from Neah Bay.
The two teams would trade the lead down the stretch.
With five seconds left and the score tied 59-59, Nagel was fouled
driving to the basket. She calmly stepped to the free-throw line and
made both free throws giving Neah Bay the two-point victory.
For Trout Lake-Glenwood, the season came to a disappointing end, but not
without a memorable first trip to state.
“We played the best we could,” VanLaar said. “We just laid it out there,
but came up short.”
Huffsmith said there’s talk about splitting the cooperative, but he
hopes the two schools stay together because their togetherness goes
beyond wins and losses.
“It pulls the two communities together,” Huffsmith said. “And it’s been
good for the kids.”
And even though they may have lost this year — the pain of losing was
visible as some left the locker room with tears in their eyes — the
Mustangs hope to build from this experience and accomplish even more
next year.
