Eagles pull away, 51-37

St. John-Endicott improves to 9-1 in first-round state games

Kelsey Simon scored 12 points, and teammate Trisha Luft pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds as St. John-Endicott beat Curlew 51-37 in the Class 1B girls state basketball tournament Wednesday.

The win improved the Eagles to 9-1 in first-round state tournament games and improved their record to 13-12. Curlew slipped to 15-11.

Simon scored eight of her points in the second half, including four during a nine-point run that snapped a 24-24 tie and gave St. John-Endicott the lead for good. The Eagles eventually led by 18 early in the fourth quarter.

Mackenzie Wilson led Curlew with 14 points, and Larissa Miller had nine rebounds. But the Cougars hurt their cause with 25 turnovers, including 14 in the second half.

Simon grabbed eight of the Eagles’ 18 steals.
