Lopez leads Gar-Pal

Vikings power past Lummi, 42-31, for first-round win

Elisha Lopez scored a game-high 16 points and had 10 rebounds to lead second-ranked Garfield-Palouse to a 42-31 victory over Lummi in the Class 1B girls state tournament Wednesday.

Teammate Bridget Bower added 11 points for the Vikings, who improved to 21-4. Courtney Shoemaker added eight rebounds.

Gar-Pal converted 34.6 percent of its shots (18 of 52) to just 27.5 percent (11 of 40) for the Blackhawks. The Vikings also outrebounded Lummi 40-32.

Gar-Pal’s defense also contributed, snaring 16 steals, including eight from Lopez, and helping force Lummi into 24 turnovers.

Sara Brady led Lummi (17-6) with 13 points, and Merisa Jones had eight rebounds.
