Rams hold off Hilanders

Curtis paces WV's 55-43 first-round win over Kelso

SEATTLE -- Haley Curtis scored 15 points and West Valley held off Kelso and standout sophomore Carly Perkins' comeback attempt in the Rams' 55-43 win on Wednesday in the first round of the Class 3A girls state tournament.

Perkins nearly brought the Hilanders (19-8) back by herself. She scored 11 straight points for Kelso at one point, trimming into the Rams' double-digit lead. Perkins had 15 of her 17 points in the second half. She also grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots.

But West Valley (18-5) had more balance. Along with Curtis, Katelin Sillery and Erin Richardson both scored 10 points and Sillery grabbed 12 rebounds.

   Kelso -- Perkins 17, Salte 9, Jackson 7, Birch 6, Karnofski 3, Warthen 1, Dahl, Wilson, Teig, Southard, Martin, Zbaeren. Totals 13-45 16-22 43.
   West Valley -- Curtis 15, Sillery 10, Richardson 10, Fannin 8, Herzog 4, Larson 4, Winkfield 4, Dolquist, Curry, Bealer, Permann, Toner. Totals 19-55 15-23 55.
