TACOMA -- Sophie Russell
scored with 1:30 left to cap her 15-point night and Courtney Blume's
steal with 5.2 seconds left secured River Ridge's 43-42 win over
Ellensburg Saturday night and a second straight Class 2A state title.
Russell's basket gave the Hawks a one-point lead. She missed a 3-pointer
on the Hawks next possession which resulted in a jump ball, and
possession sent to Ellensburg with only 21.2 seconds remaining.
Blume then stepped in front of a bounce pass into the lane and the Hawks
were able to dribbled out the clock. The lead changed hands 13 times and
the lead never climbed above five points for either side.
Kayla Standish led Ellensburg with 15 points, which was making its first
even title game appearance. Casey Kelleher added 12 for the Bulldogs.
River Ridge led by three with 4 minutes left, but Ellensburg went on an
8-2 run, led by Kelleher, that gave the Bulldogs a 42-39 lead with 2:22
left. Blume scored to bring River Ridge back within one and Russell gave
the Hawks the lead for the final time with 1:30 to play.
Blume added 10 points for the Hawks.
River Ridge led 20-15 late in the first half, its largest lead of the
night. Ellensburg then turned to Standish, who scored five points in the
first two minutes of the second half as part of an 8-1 run that gave
Ellensburg a 25-23 lead. The Bulldogs' lead grew to five before Marlette
Evans banked in a 3-pointer to close it back to two at the end of the
third.
