John Gage scored 17 points and Thomas Timm-Skove adddd 15 as top-ranked Vashon cruised to a 54-27 opening-round win over Ilwaco in the Class 1A boys state tournament Wednesday.

The Pirates (23-1) jumped out in front to a 15-6 lead, including six points from Gage, and Ilwaco couldn't get closer than six points the rest of the game.

Gage pulled down 11 rebounds as the Pirates outrebounded Ilwaco 41-26.

Vashon converted 32 percent (18 of 56) of its shots, but Ilwaco was colder, making just 27 percent (9 of 33), including just 2 of 16 in the second half.

Karl Oman and Jack Whealdon led the Fishermen (16-10) with eight points each. Oman also had four rebounds.
