Ryan Hoff scored 13 points and Karl Clocksin added 10 as King's raced past Kalama 42-23 in the first round of the Class 1A boys state tournament Wednesday.

The Knights (18-7) led the entire game, building a 23-point (40-17) late in the contest. King's got off to a sluggish start, though the Knights led Kalama 8-0 after the first quarter.

“Last year was such an emotional thing for us, to lose that first game at state against Connell,” King's coach Bill Liley said. “Maybe I dwelt on it too much, because I’ve talked to the kids about it a lot, and maybe that made the kids a little more tight coming out. We had talked about not wanting to feel that way again.”

Nick Hardy grabbed five of the Knights' 13 steals.

King's converted 16 of 40 (40 percent) of its shots to just 28 percent (10 of 36) for the Chinooks (16-9).

Robby Sanders led Kalama with 11 points and seven rebounds, and teammate Ryan Chiodo also pulled down seven rebounds.

Zack Berg and Sean Brugger grabbed nine and eight rebounds, respectively, for King's.

The Knights will face Chelan and its top scorer, Joe Harris, in Thursday's 7:30 p.m. quarterfinal.

“I think he’s (Harris) a very talented kid,” Liley said. “He has to do a lot for his team for them to be as good as they are. That’s going to be the job and the challenge for our coaching staff tonight, to stay up late and try to figure out a way to stop him.”
