Scotties rally past BC

Freeman overcomes cold shooting, tops Vikings 40-35

Carley Heinen scored a game-high 14 points and MacKenzie Taylor added 11 as the second-ranked Scotties rallied to beat No. 9 Bellevue Christian 40-35 in the Class 1A girls state quarterfinals Thursday.

Heinen's 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter tied the score at 27-27, and Taylor's layup with 5:12 to play pushed Freeman (25-0) ahead for good. Those two scores started an 8-0 run that gave the Scotties a 32-27 lead that BC couldn't overcome.

Freeman overcame a dismal shooting night, making just 18 percent (8 of 45) of its shots. The Scotties, though, improved in the second half, making 29 percent (5 of 17), while the Vikings cooled off, converting just 17 percent (4 of 24).

Michelle Teng led BC (21-4) with 13 points, while Terra Oldham pulled down 15 rebounds and Sara Contessa snared 10.
