Hayes leads Trojans' first-round victory with 17 points

Mike Hayes scored 10 of
his game-high 17 points in the second half as eighth-ranked Meridian
raced past Ilwaco 59-41 on Wednesday in the first round of the Class 1A
boys state tournament.
Hayes sank 7 of 10
shots. Teammates Zach Slesk and Josiah Sebens each chipped in 11 points,
with nine of Sebens' coming on three 3-pointers.
The Trojans (17-7)
shot 44 percent (23 of 52) in the game, including half their shots (11
of 22) in the first half, when they built a 27-13 halftime lead.
Ilwaco (12-13) shot
just 26 percent (13 of 51) in the game.
Karl Oman and Kyle
Breckinridge led the Fishermen with 10 points each.
The Trojans dominated
the boards, 44-28. Denver VanderYacht grabbed eight and Sebens seven.
