"What a game -- holy
smokes," he said after his defending champion Pirates had fought off
top-ranked Chelan 66-52 in a Class 1A state tournament first-round
battle of titans. "I'll say this -- neither of these teams deserved to
lose on Wednesday night."
But one of them had
to, given a draw that pitted third-ranked Vashon opposite the Joe
Harris-led Goats, who hadn't lost since a first-game setback to Class 2A
power Ephrata. The Pirates were denied a No. 1 state seed via a district
loss to Cascade Christian.
They looked like a No.
1 team this time, though, especially for the first 10:47 during which
Vashon (21-3) built a 32-10 lead when Harris was on the bench, saddled
with three first-quarter fouls.
But the electrifying
Harris led Chelan (23-2) back to within 40-36 with 3:48 to go in the
third quarter.
With Vashon up 51-41
and 4:28 to play, though, the 6-foot-6, Virginia-bound senior fouled out
when the Pirates' 6-9 Stanford recruit John Gage went hard to the
basket.
Harris led all scorers
with 23 points, and also grabbed seven rebounds, blocked two shots and
made two steals.
Alex Wegner had 20
points and eight boards to top Vashon while Gage added 19 points, six
rebounds three assists and two steals.
The Pirates will
oppose Bellevue Christian in a 9 o'clock quarterfinal Thursday while
Chelan must face Mabton in a 2 p.m. loser-out game.
"This sort of
capsulized our season," Sears said. "At times we've played great, and at
other times we've made things way too tough on ourselves. I thought we
had a good plan for their 1-3-1 (zone defense), but I'll tell you, Joe
Harris is the best player I've ever gone against."
