Dylan Schmick scored a single-game record 28 points to lead St. John-Endicott to a 71-59 upset victory over fourth-ranked Cusick in the Class 1B boys state tournament Thursday.

Schmick tallied 17 of his points in the second half as SJE (15-11) kept Cusick at bay. Warren Miller added 24 points.

SJE took control of the game with an 11-point run in the second quarter, including five points each from Miller and Cole McCanna, that gave the Eagles a 35-24 lead at the half.

The Eagles shot 56 percent (27 of 48) for the game, including a blistering 74 percent (14 of 19) in the second half. Schmick made 7 of 8 shots after intermission.

Spencer Shanholtzer led Cusick (20-7) with 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting, and Shem Norton added 14 points.

The Panthers also shot well, converting 49 percent (25 of 51) of their shots.

In addition to the single-game scoring record, previously set by Moses Lake Christian's Adrian Moffet in 2009 with 27, Schmick tied the record for most field goals made (12), set by Curlew's Austin Mannick in 2007.
