Lions roar past TL-G
Mustangs' return to state spoiled by SunDome regular
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
The Moses Lake Christian
boys basketball team is a regular at the Class 1B state tournament in
SunDome -- four tournaments, three trophies with a fourth looking well
in reach.
Trout Lake-Glenwood?
Doubtful many of the Mustangs remember the school's last trip to state.
That disparity in
experience showed Wednesday afternoon as the relatively
long-in-the-tooth Lions raced past TL-G for a 53-24 victory in the first
round of the 1B tournament.
While Moses Lake
Christian found its groove in the second quarter, the Mustangs never got
untracked.
"We looked like a team
that was happy to be here," said TL-G coach Dan Concienne, who guided
the Mustangs to their first state berth since 1997, when they qualified
as Trout Lake in Class B. Glenwood made it in 1992.
The Lions, runners-up
at last year's tournament and third in 2008, held the Mustangs scoreless
in the second quarter to take a 23-8 halftime lead.
"I told them, 'If you
don't have jitters something is wrong with you,'" Moses Lake Christian
coach Duke Wood said. "I think experience had a lot to do with the
game."
TL-G, which was held
to 20 percent shooting for the game, broke a 10-minute, 40-second
drought with Andy Wells' putback with 5:59 left in the third quarter to
close to within 27-10.
But the Lions went on
a 22-6 run the next nine minutes and were never seriously challenged.
Johnny Roberts scored
a game-high 20 points for Moses Lake Christian on 9-for-15 shooting, and
grabbed 15 rebounds.
The Lions (18-5)
advance to the quarterfinals for the third straight year where they'll
meet 21-2 Lummi at 5:30 p.m.
Tygh Schuster led TL-G
with six points and Jacob Wells had 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Mustangs (10-15)
play at King's Way Christian at 10:30 a.m. today in a loser-out game.
"We'll bounce back,"
Concienne said. "We've got our first game under our belt ... so we can't
use that excuse again."
