For the better part of a quarter, before she began etching her name in the
Class 1B tournament record books -- at least for a little while -- Bickleton junior Katelynn Clinton was doing pretty much what the rest of
the Pirates on the SunDome girls court were doing.

That is, she was running around looking wide-eyed and lost, absolutely
nervous to be playing in the Pirates' first state-tournament game in
nearly three decades.
"It did feel like that for a while," Clinton admitted afterwards.
"The girls had to get used to the SunDome, get used to the nerves of
playing at state," added Bickleton coach Emily Barnhart. "The first half
was all about getting over the nerves."
Once they did, though, it was all over for Lummi, the Pirates'
opening-round opponent. With Clinton racking up a 1B temporary
tournament-record 35 points, Bickleton cruised to a 50-35 victory to
move into a 4 p.m. quarterfinal Thursday against reigning champion
Colton.
"It'll be very interesting for these girls to see what a state
championship team is like," Barnhart said. "Obviously we'll have to play
a perfect game."
Wednesday's game certainly didn't start out like one for Bickleton,
which trailed 11-6 after 4 1/2 minutes and struggled to contain athletic
Lummi junior Kyla Frajman, a 5-10 senior who came into the tournament
averaging 21.0 points.
Frajman had five first-half blocks and scored 10 points in the first 10
minutes. It wasn't until after she picked up her second foul late in the
opening quarter -- and then her third midway through the second period
that the Pirates began to take control.
"Our goal was to get her in foul trouble, because we knew she was their
go-to girl," Clinton said of Frajman, who finished 19 points, eight
blocks and 17 rebounds. "I've seen her here the last couple of years, so
I knew how she played. We wanted to foul her out."
Over the final 3:18 of the first half, with Frajman on the bench with
three fouls, Bickleton went on an 11-3 run to take a 26-20 lead into the
intermission. When Aymie Osborn and Clinton opened the second half with
back-to-back 12-foot jumpers, the lead was up to 10. Even though Frajman
never fouled out -- she played the last 1 1/2 quarters with four -- the
game never got closer than six points after that.
"About the second quarter, once we got into our normal groove and
stepped up our rebounding, we settled down," Clinton said.
"We just came here to have fun. We know we're going to be the dark
horse, and that's OK. No one expected us to make it here anyway."
Clinton's all-around game is a big reason the Pirates are not only at
the tournament, but in the championship bracket. She had eight steals,
13 rebounds and a pair of assists in addition to her 35 points.
As it turned out, Clinton's tournament scoring record -- which had topped
the previous mark of 30 set in 2007 by Sunnyside Christian's Tori Van
Wingerden -- didn't last long. Wilson Creek's Ksenja Fredere broke it
with a 36-point effort just three hours later in a victory over Taholah.
