Monarchs hang on, win
Mark Morris' free throws clinch 53-50 first-round victory

Sean Atkins scored 14
points and Mark Morris sank four free throws in the final two minutes to
hold off Steilacoom 53-50 on Wednesday in the first round of the Class
2A boys state tournament.
Atkins' two free
throws with 19.5 seconds remaining pushed MM (21-3) ahead 52-48 and
clinched the win.
Trailing by the final
score, Steilacoom tried a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left, but it fell
well short.
Scott Kirkpatrick
added 13 points and Dalton Thacker 10 points for the Monarchs, who led
by 10 points early put could never put Steilacoom away.
Blayne Clanton led the
Sentinels (19-5) with 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting, including an
8-for-14 effort from 3-point range.
Steilacoom
outrebounded Mark Morris 34-23. Kelvin Penn had five for Steilacoom;
Zach Tackwell grabbed six for Mark Morris.
