Samira McDonald sank a 3-pointer with 18 seconds to play to push top-ranked River Ridge to a 47-44 win over Lynden on Wednesday in the Class 2A girls state tournament opener.

The Hawks (23-1) trailed most of the second half, taking only its second lead on McDonald's trey. Kelsey Russell added a free throw with 13 seconds left, and Lynden had a turnover and a nonviable shot attempt at the end.

Samira McDonald finished with 10 points, while Necy Wade and Jasmine McDonald scored nine each.

Wade pulled down 10 rebounds as the Hawks managed a 50-46 rebounding edge.

Riley Beard led the Lions (18-7), last year's 2A champs, with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
