Hawks eke out victory

Early lead gone, River Ridge hangs on for 47-43 semi win

TOURNEYTOWN.COM

After blowing an early 17-point, first-half lead, top-ranked River Ridge snuck out a 47-43 Class 2A girls state semifinal victory Friday over Burlington-Edison.

Jasmine McDonald, who finished with 15 points, sank a free throw with 2:46 to play that snapped a 43-43 tie. Jennifer Cole, who also scored 15 points, added a basket 47 seconds later, and Samira McDonald, who chipped in 14 points, sank a free throw to seal the win.

The close ending was a stark contrast to the game's opening, when the Hawks (25-1) bolted to a 20-3 lead.

But B-E (22-4) slowly chipped away, helped in part by 15 first-half Hawks fouls.

The Tigers tied the game at 43 on Brenna Anderson's two free throws with 2:55 to play.

Katlyn Mataya led the Tigers with 13 points, and Anderson finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
