Tigers roar past Bantams

Mataya's 17 helps lift Burlington-Edison to 60-44 victory

Katlyn Mataya scored 17 points and Brenna Anderson 16 to lead fifth-ranked Burlington-Edison past Clarkston 60-44 on Wednesday in the Class 2A girls state tournament.

Mataya canned 5 of 9 3-pointers, and scored 12 of her points in the first half.

The Tigers (21-3) trailed the majority of the first three quarters until Anderson hit two free throws with 3:15 to play in the third to push B-E ahead 35-34. That sparked a 12-3 run that pushed the Tigers ahead 45-36 after three quarters, and Clarkston never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

But the win was costly. Point guard Kristine Thoe suffered a knee injury that coach Mike Buckholz said was "90 percent sure" a torn ACL. She's done for the tournament.

Anderson sank 14 points in the second half.

The Tigers outrebounded the Bantams (11-13) 43-32. Cambie Edwards grabbed nine and Anderson seven.

Kellie McCann-Smith scored 27 points on 8-of-21 shooting for Clarkston. She also pulled down eight rebounds and had two assists and two steals.
