Eagles soar to first win

Nilles scores 22 as West Valley tops Black Hills, 48-34

Shanique Nilles tallied game-highs of 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead second-ranked West Valley of Spokane to a 48-34 first-round victory over Black Hills on Wednesday in the Class 2A girls state tournament.

Nilles scored 13 points in the first half as the Eagles (23-0) built a 31-15 halftime lead and were never threatened in the second half. Leah Peterson added seven points.

The Eagles' defense came away with 13 steals, including five from Nilles, and pressured the Wolves (13-11) into 18 turnovers.

WV turned those miscues into 20 points.

Chelsea Haskey scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for the Wolves, and Sara Meyers tossed in 12 points.
