TOURNAMENT TURMOIL
So, were there any other options?

So the WIAA needed to net an additional $150,000 from basketball. Besides revamping its championship tournament format, what else might have accomplished that goal?

From a girls basketball coach: "We have nearly 400 high schools in our state that all have boys and girls basketball teams. You could have had each high school in the state write a $200 check to the WIAA and give us a 21st game.
Every other year we'd have an extra home game, and we could send the WIAA that check."

Projected net profit for the WIAA (based on each of 377 girls and 378 boys teams playing a 21st game and paying $200, whether home or away): $151,000.

From a Yakima accountant: "What was the paid attendance at (all of the WIAA's state basketball) tournaments last year? 110,000? And they're only down $150,000? Why don't they just raise the ticket prices a buck and a half?"

Projected net profit for the WIAA (based on $1.50 per spectator per day and last year's total attendance of 110,487): $165,730.
