It neither surprised nor disappointed Granger that Lakeside came into Ike Gym on Friday night ready to run.

Because that's what the Spartans do.

And while the Eagles were highly capable in a full-court, up-tempo game and got stellar performances from several players, Granger got 31 points from Brandon Oswalt and a 66-61 victory in first-round Class 1A state tournament play.

Oswalt, a high-energy 5-foot-10 senior, scored 11 points in a frenzied fourth quarter that saw Lakeside cut a 10-point deficit to two before the Spartans iced the game with an 8-0 run.

Granger, ninth ranked and 17-7, advances to a Thursday quarterfinal at 5:30 p.m. in the SunDome against a yet-to-be-determined foe. Lakeside (17-10) meets Zillah in a loser-out contest at 3 p.m. today at Ike.

"Oswalt had 31?" asked Spartans coach Miguel Bazaldua, looking incredulously at the gym's electronic individual scoreboard. "I guess it was a quiet 31, if there can be such a thing. I'm at a loss for words."

Not to mention breath.

Lakeside, from Nine Mile Falls near Spokane, got a monster game of 19 points and 17 rebounds from 6-5 senior Ryan Gunderson, 18 points from Conner Moffatt and 12 from Demetrius Watson.

Yet the Eagles turned the ball over 25 times against Granger's intense, scrambling pressure and led only in the early minutes.

Down 49-39 early in the final period, Lakeside made it 56-54 on Jacob Erickson's jumper with 2:07 to play.

But Matt James scored of an offensive rebound, and after a 30-second Spartans timeout, Johnny Pacheco got an inside bucket off a nice feed from Brandon Castro, who along with Andrew Reddout scored 13 points. Reddout, who missed some time with a nose bleed, also grabbed eight rebounds before fouling out with 2:47 left.

Following Pacheco's hoop, Oswalt converted a three-point play off a sweet assist from Pacheco for a 62-54 Granger lead with 1:00 remaining.

Castro and Oswalt then converted two free throws each to close the Spartans scoring.

"We're extremely happy to get out of here with a win," Bazaldua said. "Lakeside's a good club and they did some nice things against us. But we're going on to the SunDome and we're pretty pumped about it."
