The Clover Park Warriors
may have entered the Class 2A boys state tournament as the top-ranked
team, but from the start, they came with a chip on their shoulders.
The Warriors knew at some point they'd have to go through defending
champion Squalicum, and after losing narrowly to the Storm last week,
the Warriors looked forward to the opportunity they ultimately got in
Saturday night's state championship at the SunDome.
"Squalicum beat us in regionals, so we knew if we didn't come out with
the effort that we did, we wouldn't come out on top," senior Tana
Pritchard said.
Clover Park erased its earlier defeat in impressive fashion, storming
past Squalicum in the tournament's final game 69-54 on Saturday night.
Pritchard scored 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds in helping
Clover Park earn its first state title.
"It feels great, but it wasn't just for our team, it was for the
community, our family and our school," Pritchard said.
The first half was a battle. Squalicum ended the first quarter up 17-15,
and after two lead changes and three ties in the first half, Clover Park
went to the locker room with a 30-26 lead.
Things quickly picked up for CP in the third period, though, as the
Warriors posted a 13-0 run that left Squalicum unable to recover. A late
fourth-quarter surge by Squalicum saw a 16-point deficit trimmed to
nine, but the Storm would get no closer.
"They beat us in rebounding last time and we feel like that was one of
the biggest reasons they beat us," Pritchard said. "They run the ball
really well. They did that against us the first time and we didn't let
them do that this time. So that's why we won."
Pritchard was named the tournament's MVP, a welcome surprise for the
multi-sport athlete who plans to play linebacker for Washington State.
"It feels great, really," he said. "I'm smiling."
Freshmen David Crisp and Ahmaad Rorie were the game's biggest surprises,
though. Rorie scored a team-high 21 points while Crisp chipped in 15.
"It's 27 years of blood, sweat and tears," Clover Park coach Mel Ninnis
said. "I don't mean to sound cocky, but when you've got guys like Tana
Pritchard and two unbelievable freshmen (in Crisp and Rorie), and
players that know their roles, that's what makes it happen."
