Knights Stun Riverside Sunnyside Christian holds off No. 7 Crusaders, 45-34
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC Hernandez, a 5-foot sophomore, scored four straight points to help the Knights turn a 37-34 lead with 3:04 to play into a 41-34 advantage with 1:52 remaining that sealed the win for SC, which improved to 4-1 in league and 6-4 overall. She sank a free throw with 2:10 to play, then iced the contest with a 3-point play. Riverside Christian, ranked seventh in the first Class B poll of the season, slipped to 11-3 overall and suffered its first league loss in seven games. Hilary Hughes and Tyssyna VanWingerden led Sunnyside Christian with 12 points each, and Tami Lambrecht chipped in 11. Van Wingerden pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, and Hughes added 10. RC suffered from ice-cold shooting, making just 15.5 percent (11 of 71) of its shots, including only 9.4 percent (3 of 32) in the first half. The Crusaders also were hampered by foul trouble. Star Erin Shively, who finished with 11 points, picked up her third and fourth fouls early in the third quarter and eventually fouled out with 2:10 to play in the game. Mary Labbee, who pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, fouled out with 20 seconds to play in the third quarter. Katie Van Beek led Riverside with 13 points.
The Crusaders trailed by 13 points (31-18) with 2:10 to
play in the third quarter before slowly cutting their deficit to three on
Jenna Wolverton's layup with 3:04 left in the game.
