Warriors Eke Out Win Seattle Christian rallies late for 39-36 victory over Granger

SCOTT SPRUILL His Granger boys demonstrated superiority in so many ways over Seattle Christian that it was almost mystifying how they came out on the short end of a 39-36 decision. Almost. “We outrebounded them, we made more free throws, we had fewer turnovers and we shut them out in the second quarter” Gibb said with a incredulous smile. “We did a lot of things real well.” But on the scoreboard, not in the myriad of stats, that’s where the problem was. Thirty-six points. “We preach defense so much,” Gibb concluded, “it seems like we’ve forgotten about offense.” It would seem so, at least lately. For the second time in four days, the Spartans failed to score 40 points and lost. But the team has nonetheless won 10 games already this season and is capable of much better offensive pop, Gibb said. “This was our measuring stick for state, so the kids know where they are now,” the coach said, “Seattle Christian has a great program and we’re close. We shot 26 percent (from the field) so we know where we have to get better.” Seattle Christian coach Roger DeBoer had his own reasons for being mystified. His Warriors were held scoreless for over 12 minutes spanning the second and third quarters and still managed to win. “To get held scoreless (in the second quarter) and still have the lead at halftime. How many times do you see that?,” said DeBoer, who has taken a team to the 1A state championship game in five of the last six years. “We had to rely on some things other than scoring, and the kids just gutted it out at the end.”
Thanks in large part to a player he didn’t think he’d
have. Scheibner’s third trey came with 1:22 left and gave SC a 35-34 lead — the sixth and final lead change in the final quarter. Jordan Collier and Trevor Peterson each made a pair of free throws in the last 42 seconds to lock up the win. After spotting Seattle Christian a 15-6 lead in the first quarter when the Warriors canned three of their five 3-pointers, Granger spent much of the game in chase mode. The Spartans’ determined effort finally paid off with the help of Robert Cardenas, who scored all 13 of his team-points in the second half. Cardenas came off the bench to sling in three 3-pointers and he had a flurry of eight straight points that put Granger up 34-30 with 3:12 to play. “We caught them but didn’t have enough gas left to finish it,” Gibb said.
Granger’s leading scorer Chris Cardenas was held to
eight points but he also collected 10 rebounds and four assists and three
steals.
