CV Survives a Wild One Reilly free throws seal 68-67 Lady Bear win over Rams
By
ROGER UNDERWOOD "This," WV coach Jason Rubright said after his team did everything but beat the powerful Class 4A Bears in the Tourneytown.com Shootout, "was a game that will do nothing but help us. You put this in your memory bank and you take the lessons and you learn from them. It was a great experience for our kids." And very nearly a victory. The Rams and Bears might still be playing, in fact, had not Cassidy Murillo been forced to step around a defender, thus making her game-ending shot a 2-pointer instead of a three and ending CV's 68-67 overtime victory. That's the type of game it was, with both teams operating at near peak efficiency in front of an appreciative SunDome crowd. Sixth-ranked Central Valley, which has played in the last three 4A state title games, improved to 11-1. West Valley, ranked fourth in Class 3A, slipped to 10-2, with its only other loss a last-second defeat to a team from North Carolina in a California tournament title game. The Rams, however, were encouraged by taking a top-flight 4A team and standout guard Reagan Pariseau to the wire. After leading 21-12 at the end of the first quarter, one in which Pariseau went scoreless, West Valley fell victim to the Bears' rebounding superiority (35-29) and, eventually, to Pariseau. Still, the Rams forced overtime when Murillo, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, drove the right side and hit an eight-foot runner as time ran out. In overtime, the Bears went ahead 66-61 as Pariseau connected on a hanging shot from the lane with 1:00 left. But WV got two free throws from Lauren Olander and a steal and layup from Jessica Redifer to make it 66-65 with 46.5 seconds to play. The Rams had a chance to go ahead, even, when Andrea Edwards stole the ball under CV's basket and Olander missed successive shot attempts inside. Kayla Reilly, fouled with 9.8 seconds left, made both free throws for a 68-65 Bears advantage. After a CV time out, West Valley rushed the ball goalward in hopes of a score-tying three, but Murillo was closely-guarded and, consequently, stepped on the 3-point line when she fired the final shot. Murillo led all scorers with 18 points, Olander had 15 points and nine rebounds and reserve Jenni Carlos added 14 points. Pariseau, a swift and smart 5-5 point guard who's headed for Arizona State, totaled 17 points and nine assists for Central Valley.
"She's the best guard we've seen this year," said
Rubright. "She's not just a good athlete, she's a smart player. She lets the
game come to her and adapts to the flow."
