  Dream Matchups Highlight
Second Annual Shootout

YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

A pair of cross-classification dream matchups will highlight the second Tourneytown.com Shootout, a six-game slate of high school basketball games set for the Yakima Valley SunDome on Jan. 19, 2004.

And West Valley is at the center of both those marquee contests.

The Rams' girls will take on 2002 state 4A champion and 2003 runner-up Central Valley, and the boys will face reigning 1A state titlist Brewster.

The girls game will tip off at 3:45 p.m., and the boys game will cap the six-game slate at 7:30 p.m.

A total of eight placers from the 2003 state tournaments will be included in the field.

Riverside Christian and Sunnyside Christian will again play a boys-girls Greater Columbia B League doubleheader as part of the Shootout, with the girls contest opening the day's event at 10:30 a.m. The boys game will follow at 12:15 p.m.

Granger's boys, a year after playing Brewster in the inaugural event, will take on another 1A state power -- Seattle Christian at 2 p.m. The Warriors have reached the 1A state final in each of the last four years.

Coming off their 1A state championship season, Brewster's girls will be paired with Burbank, a 1A state qualifier in 2003 and the fifth-place team in 2002. That game, sandwiched between the two West Valley games, will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The most intriguing matchups of the day will be the West Valley games and their first-ever pairings with Brewster and Central Valley.

Brewster's boys rolled to a 28-0 record last season and should be even better next season with the return of Gonzaga-recruit David Pendergraft. The Rams, coming off a state-trophy season, will return all-stater Andrew Strait.

Central Valley's girls from Spokane return four freshman from their 27-2 state-runnerup team. The Bears will also have back point guard Reagan Pariseau, who started her prep career in Brewster.

West Valley's girls will have even more back from their fifth-place state team, returning all but three seniors.

The Tourneytown.com Shootout is presented by the Yakima Herald-Republic, the Central Washington State Fair and the Greater Yakima Sports Association, and sponsored by the Yakima Herald-Republic.
