A month ago in the hotbox of Davis Gym, Jack Loofburrow remembers he and his Eisenhower teammates played like they were in a deep freeze.

And as the evening wore on, the temperature continued to drop.

Four weeks later that legless night remains as the only loss for the Cadets’ boys basketball team and how far it has come since then was clearly evident Monday night in the rematch of city rivals.

Loofburrow and company were determined to be quicker, more aggressive and on their game. In other words ...

“We wanted to come out on fire right at the start,” Loofburrow said. “We wanted to be the ones with energy and kept it going the entire game, no letups.”

With Loofburrow’s monster 30-point night has their guide, the Cadets did indeed have nonstop energy and led wire-to-wire in a 77-51 victory over Davis before a crowd of 4,429 in Monday’s Tourneytown.com Shootout at the SunDome. A month ago it was Davis that came away the winner, 57-48.

“We were just so slow for some reason last time,” said Loofburrow, Ike’s 6-foot-7 standout senior. “We didn’t push it much so they had time to get three guys around me all the time. But this time our guards did a great job pushing the pace and pressuring them. I had a lot more open space.”

Nobody was more motivated for a turnaround than Drew Harris, Ike’s junior point guard who was held to four points in the first meeting. He set the tone early by slashing to the basket for the Cadets’ first two baskets.

“I’ve been thinking about this game the whole time since we lost,” said Harris, who finished with 14 points. “I just wasn’t aggressive last time, not even close. So I was really looking for a quick start and those two baskets got me in the flow right off.”

Eisenhower’s energy wasn’t just productive for the offense. The Cadets forced nine turnovers in the first quarter to trigger a 15-3 run and Davis finished with 19 turnovers -- 11 more than the first meeting.

“The pace of the game changed everything for us,” said Ike coach Pat Fitterer. “We were way more aggressive this time and Drew got us going. We surprised them a little at the start, coming out on them with pressure.”

The Cadets were sharp at full speed and not bad standing still, making a dazzling 27 of 29 free throws. Loofburrow made 13 of 14 and Chris Dyer, who popped in three 3-pointers, connected on 7 of 8.

“I think Chris and I have to run lines tomorrow for those misses,” smiled Loofburrow, who also collected 11 rebounds. “With Chris making those 3s and Drew pushing the ball inside, I had more room -- a lot more room than last time. We came out and played great team ball.”

Dyer pitched in two of his 3-pointers during Ike’s 15-3 run in the opening period and ended up with 18 points and five steals.

Davis got within 38-24 early in the third quarter but Loofburrow and Dyer scored Ike’s next 12 points in a flurry, capped by Dyer’s fastbreak pass to Loofburrow for a dunk.

“It’s funny because 30 points is huge but Jack spread it out through the whole game. It was almost a quiet 30,” Fitterer said. “He was relentless.”

Nico Sandoval led Davis with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. He scored 16 of the Pirates’ 25 points in the middle two quarters.

After losing tough games to Southridge and Pasco last Friday and Saturday, the Pirates were flat from the field shooting 36.4 percent. Ike played Friday but had a bye on Saturday.

“Our kids were hesitant attacking their press, and that start (falling behind) was basically the ball game,” said Davis coach Eli Juarez. “We have to do a better job blocking out -- that’s one of our Achilles heels. They found (Loofburrow) a lot easier tonight than the first time.”

Heading into the second half of the Big Nine Conference season, both teams return to play on Friday with Eisenhower (10-1 conference, 11-1 overall) hosting Wenatchee and Davis (7-4, 8-4) traveling to Walla Walla.
