State champs' battle

YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
School’s out today, but basketball is most
definitely in.
A day in the Yakima Valley SunDome will afford
local high school basketball fans a look at the boys and girls teams
from Eisenhower, Davis and West Valley in the fifth annual
Tourneytown.com Shootout.
But there’s a lot more than that in the nine-game
slate, like a showcase girls game between three-time Class 1A state
champion Colfax and reigning Class B trophy winner La Salle.
That game sits in the middle of the daylong
schedule with a start time of 2:30 p.m.
“We’re excited and hoping to compete well in such a
big game,” said La Salle coach Todd Kent. “It’s great for girls
basketball.”
La Salle (11-2) returned all five of its starters
from last year’s title team but has absorbed losses to Chelan, which is
also in today’s field, and Sunnyside Christian. Colfax (10-1) hasn’t
gone unscathed either, but the Bulldogs are hot nonetheless with 10
straight victories after a season-opening setback at Burbank. Moreover,
Colfax has won 16 straight games in the SunDome.
The final four games of the day are loaded with the
big-school locals, and Davis and West Valley will be paired in both
games, the girls at 4 p.m. and the boys at 7:15 p.m.
Eisenhower will face Southridge, the boys scheduled
for 5:30 p.m., and the girls in the nightcap at 9 p.m.
Southridge’s boys own a 10-2 season record, lead
the Columbia Basin League’s 3A Division and have won five of six
nonleague games against the CBL’s 4A teams. The Suns are ranked sixth in
The Seattle Times’ latest 3A state rankings.
The first half of the day will include two 10-win
teams — Riverside Christian’s boys and Chelan’s girls.
Riverside Christian has won nine of its last 10
games and will contest the Shootout’s first tip in an 8:30 a.m. game
against Kittitas.
Chelan, like Colfax, lost its season-opening game
against Ellensburg but has since reeled off 10 straight victories. The
Goats will take on White Pass, a traditional 1A power that has moved
down to 2B, at 10 a.m.
Grandview’s boys are coming off losing their first
two games of the season during the weekend and will face Chelan at 11:30
a.m.
Granger’s boys, likewise, will seek to recover from
Saturday’s setback to Zillah with a 1 p.m. game against Freeman, which
has qualified for the last eight state 1A tournaments.
