A game between small-school girls basketball teams
might easily be overlooked in a nine-game array of bigger-school games
of perennial powers in both the boys and girls ranks.
But don't let that fool you. That small-school game
in the middle of those nine contests in this year's Tourneytown.com
Shootout, slated for Jan. 15 in the SunDome, is anything but small.
One team captured its third straight Class 1A state
title with a lineup almost entirely populated with underclassmen.
The other team captured the last Class B
championship -- the division since having been replaced by 1B and 2B
classifications -- with, yes, a lineup of underclassmen.
While the entire lineup has plenty to offer from
8:30 a.m. to after 9 p.m. -- four matchups between 2005 state-tourney
teams, intriguing inter-classification showdowns in both the boys
(Eisenhower vs. Southridge and West Valley vs. Davis in both boys and
girls) -- that 2:30 p.m. game in the middle is worth the price of
admission all by itself.
Colfax, which considers the SunDome practically its
home court -- witness the Bulldogs' sweeps of the last three state
volleyball and basketball championships on that floor -- against La
Salle, whose road trip to the SunDome is about, oh, three miles.
Two teams that are almost certain to begin the
season ranked No. 1 -- and likely to still be there come the Ides of
January.
"One thing we've got going against us is that they
don't lose in the SunDome. They've won 12 straight games there,"
Lightning coach Todd Kent said of the Bulldogs. "So it's like there's a
homecourt advantage for them, even though the SunDome is really in our
backyard."
Colfax returns return nine of its top 10 players.
La Salle graduated only two reserves off its 2005-06 team.
"I'll tell you what, La Salle's bringing a ton to
the table," Colfax coach Cory Baerlocher. "I know what he's bringing
back. They're going to get after it -- they're going to get up and down
the court on us. They've got an impressive bunch of athletes -- long and
lanky and athletic. You tell Todd Kent to send me some of his game tapes
-- and in slow motion, so I can see his kids."
The Lightning boast the reigning Class B player of
the year in Molly McGree and another all-stater in Jasmine Stohr. Colfax
has a first-team all-stater in point guard Jordan Harazin.
"We're very fortunate to be able to schedule this
game," Kent said. "It's a great opportunity to be able to gauge where we
are going into the season, and it'll be very interesting to see how we
match up, because we do play similar styles of basketball.
"It could be a barnburner."
So could some of the other matchups, three of which
pit state-tourney teams from last spring against once another --
Grandview's boys (sixth place in 2A) against Chelan (didn't place),
Granger's boys (seventh in 1A) against Freeman (didn't place) and
Chelan's girls (fourth in 2A) against White Pass (third in 1A).
Tickets will go on sale (at prices yet to be
determined) in early December at participating schools or at the SunDome
ticket office.
