first thought was to hold up and wait for her teammates. In fact, it was
her only thought.
But the loudest voices had other ideas.

So the Davis sophomore, in open court with a
single defender ahead, flew forward with a sudden confidence and
produced the play of the game -- a 3-point play with 15 seconds left
that lifted the Pirates to a 34-30 victory over West Valley.
“I heard my coach (Tim Lee) and my sister (Tiana)
and they both yelled, Go!, Go!,” Briggs said. “I wasn’t going to at
first because I’m not really a scorer, more of a rebounder.”
On Monday in the SunDome, Briggs was both. And
big.
Sparked by the sophomore’s first double-double
-- 10 points and 12 rebounds -- the Pirates rallied from an 11-point
deficit in the third quarter to earn their fourth win of the season.
Davis struggled with its shot from the field but
not from the foul line, hitting 9 of 11 free throws in the final period.
Junior Aubri Gonzalez hit eight free throws and
led Davis with 12 points. And it was Gonzalez’s skip pass to Briggs that
set up the go-ahead play.
“That’s Kanisha, so unselfish,” Lee said of
Briggs’ idea of pulling back on the decisive play. “She’s got the speed
and the shot to make that move, so I wanted her to go for it.”
The Pirates produced 20 of their 34 points in
the fourth quarter after making just 2 of 22 shots in the first half.
“We kind of got yelled at during halftime,”
Briggs said. “We were just doing stupid stuff, like not running the
court like we should.”
Davis got the message in the second half and
used a more aggressive floor game to draw fouls against the taller Rams.
With Gonzalez and Briggs combining to go 14-for-20, the Pirates
outscored West Valley 15-5 at the foul line.
“The last two, three weeks we’ve been getting
great looks but haven’t been able to score,” Lee said of Davis’ recent
five-game losing streak. “I’m trying to get the kids to take the ball
harder to the hole and they did more of that in the second half.
“And they played pretty good defense.”
At the start and finish.
The Pirates held West Valley without a field
goal in the opening quarter, but the Rams took command with an 11-0 run
in the second period. Kristin Abhold’s 3-pointer at the end of the third
quarter put WV’s seemingly safe margin at 22-14.
Katie Hawkins hit back-to-back baskets for the
Rams in the final two minutes to delay Davis’ comeback, but the Pirates
scored the final six points of the game.
Hawkins finished with nine points and 11
rebounds.
Davis (4-8) returns to Columbia Basin League 4A
play on Friday with a home game against Wenatchee while West Valley
(4-8) travels to Hanford for a CBL 3A contest. |
