Ten
local teams take the court in annual event
YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC
Ever since West Valley and Selah clashed in the
Class A state boys basketball championship final 45 years ago in Tacoma,
these two Yakima Valley schools have had a special rivalry.
Tonight they will renew that long-standing rivalry on the big floor in
the SunDome.
Capping a nine-game parade of prep hoop contests in the sixth annual
Tourneytown.com Shootout, the boys from West Valley (8-5) and Selah
(4-7) will meet at 7:30 p.m. followed by the West Valley girls (7-5)
against Selah (5-6) in the nightcap at 9.
Eisenhower's teams will take the floor against Southridge during the
dinner hours, the girls tipping off at 4:30 and the boys going at 6.
Most of the afternoon is reserved for Davis -- the girls (1-12) meet
Chelan (9-3) at 1 p.m. and the boys (5-8) take on Kamiakin (5-8) at 3.
Prep basketball fans can see all those local teams and more for just one
$8.50 ticket. If you're interested in a preview of the Class 1A state
tournament in the SunDome later this season, check out these early
Shootout pairings -- Colfax's four-time reigning champion girls (13-2)
vs. Brewster (9-3) at 8:30 a.m., Brewster's defending champion boys
(7-5) vs. Granger (7-6) at 10 a.m. and Chelan's boys (11-2) vs.
Grandview (6-5) at 11:30 a.m.
The evening, however, will be the prime-time domain of West Valley and
Selah, who bested the Rams in the 1963 state A final 50-37 in the UPS
Fieldhouse.
West Valley's boys appear to have hit their stride in recent games,
winning three straight to move into a tie for the CBL 3A lead. The Rams
have won five of six, including a 50-42 win over ninth-ranked Eastmont
last Friday. Selah's boys have been on the flipside of WV's recent run,
having lost five of six. But the Vikings are close -- eight of their 11
games have been decided by eight points or less.
The scenario is similar in the girls matchup. The Rams, sparked by a
resurgent offense, are on a four-game win streak after a 0-5 dip while
Selah has dropped four of five. The Vikings haven't had trouble scoring,
averaging 60.3 points through 11 games.
Eisenhower's boys (9-5) are 3-0 in the Shootout and last year the Cadets
beat Southridge (5-7) 66-58 before both went on to claim state trophies
in their respective classes. The hot-cold Suns started 0-4, won four in
a row but is coming in with losses to West Valley and Hanford.
Ike's girls are 2-11; Southridge's girls are 5-6.
Grandview's boys might get the consistency they've been lacking now that
they are healthy. The Greyhounds' offense has reached 65 points or
better in three straight since not topping 55 in its first eight games.
Led by Joe Harris' 21.6-point average, Chelan's seventh-ranked boys had
a nine-game win streak before falling to Lake Roosevelt on Jan. 11.
The Shootout's early-bird game should be a dandy. Colfax's second-ranked
girls have won seven straight since falling to East Valley of Yakima in
the SunDome last month and No. 10 Brewster rolls in with a six-game win
streak. |
