Martha Taylor poured in a game-high 20 points and
converted all 12 of her free-throw tries as Brewster defeated a sluggish
Colfax squad 48-41 Monday in the first game of the Tourneytown.com
Shootout.
Colfax, the four-time defending Class 1A champion,
was sluggish most of the first half. The team took the court just 10
minutes before game time, and didn't get into a rhythm until just before
intermission.
By then, however, it was almost too late. Brewster
(10-3) led 24-18 at the half, but Taylor caught fire in the final 16
minutes. She scored 11 in the second half, including both of her
3-pointers.
"I'm just happy we had the privilege of playing
them," said Taylor, who was the only Brewster player in double figures.
"They're a great team. We handled the pressure. We knew they weren't
going to give us the win; we were going to have to earn it."
Kayla Johnson and Jordan Harazin each scored 12
points for Colfax, which slipped to 13-3.
The Bears converted just 22.5 percent of their
field goals (9 of 40), but hit 42.9 percent (6 of 14) of their treys.
Colfax, which trailed the entire game, pulled
within two points, 26-24, on a jumper by Johnson with 2:53 to go in the
third quarter.
But Taylor quickly answered with a three-pointer,
and the Bulldogs never got closer than five points the rest of the game.
Colfax coach Corey Baerlocher wasn't happy with his
team's slow start.
"I started calling our kids' rooms at 7 and the
kids were still in bed," Baerlocher said. "There's not a team wake-up
call; everybody does their own. Maybe it's just that they're used to
playing late games.
"Losing can be, hopefully, a little inspirational,"
Baerlocher added. "We knew Brewster would be improved. They shot
lights-out and we missed lay-ins and free throws. No excuses, though.
They came out and played aggressive and they kicked our butts. This was
Brewster of old here."
Taylor's 12-for-12 performance at the free-throw
line set a Shootout record. |
