Southridge rolls past
Eisenhower, 54-31
TOURNEYTOWN.COM
Four games in six days showed from the foul line
for the Eisenhower girls basketball team.
The weary Cadets shot only 4 of 15 from the
free-throw line as Southridge pulled away for a 54-31 non-eague victory
Monday. The energy from playing in the SunDome and the Tourneytown.com
Shootout carried Ike through the first quarter before the Suns’ pressing
defense allowed them to pull away.
“They were beat and we had a couple girls
battling the flu,” Eisenhower coach Chris Cook said. “The kids were just
tired physically and emotionally — just beat.”
Ike jumped ahead to start, building a 6-2
advantage. This was the largest lead they had the entire game as
Southridge rallied with a 10-2 run for a 12-8 advantage at the end of
the first quarter. The CBL 3A team never trailed from there.
All the poor free-throw shooting allowed the
Suns to stretch that lead to 26-17 by halftime. The Cadets missed all
four shots from the foul line and couldn’t keep up with their opponent’s
speedy nature for good reason.
Eisenhower (2-12 overall) had a long week
starting with a late-night trip to Walla Walla on Tuesday followed by
the emotional test of Friday’s cross-town rivalry game with Davis. Then
Saturday’s game against Wenatchee started two hours late because the
Panthers had mechanical issues with their bus, getting the girls finally
off the floor at 10:45 p.m.
So Southridge’s speed was even harder to contain
as 12 of the team’s points came on the fast break. Heather Worley led
all scorers with 13 points, Jamie Lyons added 11 and Jenna Wallace
rounded out the Suns (6-6) in double figures with 10.
“(Southridge) played tough, in-your-face
defense,” Cook said. “They were scrappy and got after it, and our team
just couldn’t deal with it.”
Brittany Gaut led all Eisenhower scorers with
nine points as the squad struggled to get into an offensive rhythm.
Southridge iced the contest with a 20-7 run in the third quarter and
converted 22 Ike turnovers into 19 points for the game.
The Suns, who lost last year’s Tourneytown.com
Shootout matchup with the Cadets 46-34, shot 44 percent (20 of 45) from
the field compared to Ike’s 28 percent (13 of 47) and went 11 of 18 from
the foul line. They led by as many as 26 with 6 minutes, 47 seconds
remaining in the contest. |
