West Valley's girls basketball team has stirred up
a familiar feeling and it has the Rams smiling. December is gone, the
second half of the season is here and the magic is back.
Winning their fifth straight game after an 0-5
trudge through the holidays, West Valley started fast Monday night and
never let up en route to a 72-47 win over Selah in the nightcap of the
Tourneytown.com Shootout.
This time a year ago West Valley was suffering
through a 4-9 start, including a 34-30 loss to Davis in the Shootout,
but by March the Rams hoisted a third-place trophy at the Class 3A state
tournament.
"I don't know if it's quite the same since we
have only one senior back, but things are
clicking now," said WV coach Greg Oldham. "I like the way we're shooting
now. The kids are hitting the right spots and making the right passes."
Two days after putting up 83 points at
Kennewick, the Rams were steaming again on Monday, scoring the first 12
points of the game and leading 17-2 after the first quarter. Eight
players scored in the first half and all 10 made the scorebook by the
third period.
"This group is very unselfish," Oldham said.
"They definitely get that part of the game."
Haley Curtis, Katelin Sillery, Erin Richardson
and Leah Bealer all hit double figures for WV, including 13 points from
Curtis, and Richardson added 11
rebounds.
Valley scoring leader Sasha Valdez led Selah
with 14 points and she had a team-high six rebounds. |
