RC Holds Off Late Charge for Win

By WENDY JOHNS
SPECIAL TO THE YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC

For the second time this season, Riverside Christian girls proved too tough for Sunnyside Christian to handle.

Even with a strong second half, the Knights were unable to overcome a 14-0 first quarter deficit and lost 46-41 to the Crusaders at Monday's Tourneytown.com Shootout at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The Knights entered Monday's game on a three-game winning streak. Sunnyside Christian defeated Trout Lake by 25 points on Jan. 11, La Salle by 31 on Friday and triumphed 38-33 over Klickitat on Saturday.

It was only a matter of time before the Knights became exhausted.

The first few minutes crept by slowly, without either team making a basket. Midway through the first period, a personal foul by Sunnyside Christian's Jordan Robert put Riverside Christian's 6-foot starter, Erin Shively, at the free throw line. Shively successfully hit both of the free throw attempts, making 7 of 8 on the night.

Using their height advantage, the Crusaders kept the field goals soaring over the heads of the Knights will little concern of being blocked and ended the first quarter ahead 14-0.

"Our size was the best advantage," said Shively. "They knew it. They kept it on the outside."

SC woke up in the second quarter and made a solid run at the Crusaders in the second half. The Knights outscored Riverside Christian 13-10 in both the third and the four quarters.

Still, the damage had been done.

"We didn't deviate from our plan. Offensively, we wanted to pound it into them, then get the ball to Shively," said RC coach Rick Van Beek. "(Sunnyside Christian) played with huge energy after playing three of the toughest teams in the last four games."

Attempts to get Shively the ball toward the end were botched by fouls. Fully anticipating the Crusader's maneuvers, the Knights kept Shively heavily guarded, making field goal attempts difficult.

"I knew if I got the ball, I could pull through," said Shively, who led Riverside Christian with 13 points.

Tyssyna Van Wingerden led Sunnyside Christian with 14 points. Hillary Hughes -- who hit three of her five 3-point attempts -- added 12 points for the Knights.
