This kept the Grandview defense scrambling, the
offense from organizing and there wasn't much else going right for the
Greyhounds on center floor of the SunDome. Selah had everything covered
as it never dropped a game in four matches to clinch the Class 2A state
volleyball championship on Saturday.
"I'm just really happy," said Selah coach Kay
Aberle as she sat in the middle of the floor adding up her team's stats
after a 25-17, 28-26, 25-16 victory.

She had to make sure to carry the one a few
times when adding up her setter's numbers. A third-year starter at the
position, Powell capped her final game with 25 assists and showed she
has the ability to finish plays as well as start them with a team-high
13 kills.
The command of Aberle's complicated offense was
apparent from the get-go as she used numerous looks to keep the
Grandview front line guessing. Sometimes long sets helped give Rachel
Fickes nine kills on the night; other times quick snaps to Kierea Meloy
helped her finish with seven kills.
So how many possible choices does she have when
the ball comes onto Selah's side with only a fraction of a second to
place a pass?
"I have several; it depends on where the ball
is," Powell said. "I put it to the one that works — to have all these
options is just amazing."
Grandview, which beat Selah during the CWAC
regular season in four games, didn't wilt under all the offensive
pressure. The Greyhounds even looked to have figured out the Selah
offense and take control of the match with a 21-15 lead in the second
game.
Then something that doesn't usually happen in
rally-point scoring occurred. The Vikings rallied, swatting away three
Grandview game points to close out a 28-26 victory behind kills from
Fickes and Dani Gunner, who had five in the match to go with four
blocks.
"That was just a true sign of character," said
Aberle, who now has five state championships at Selah in her 13 years of
coaching. "These girls are just in shape and never let up."
The comeback took just enough out of Grandview's
tough exterior to give Selah a pretty easy third game. Kealey Johnston
went down firing with 11 kills and tried her best to stop the Viking
defense with 22 digs as the fourth-ranked Greyhounds fell for the second
time in three games to Selah this year — the first was a loss in the
CWAC district championship.
"We knew we had to keep concentrating because,
if we let up, they'd come right back," Fickes said. "Grandview is a
great team that just keeps battling."

The Greyhounds didn't spend much time celebrating
the a second-place finish after taking fifth in the state last year.
They marched off the floor and did not wait to watch Selah receive the
championship trophy — its second in two years after winning the Class 3A
title.
Grandview coach John LaFever was also short with
his comments on the match.
"They know they played well," said LaFever of
his girls as he put the second-place trophy back in the box and made his
way off the main floor.
Grandview hadn't dropped a game in the first
three matches as well before running into the Vikings. They also showed
off their moxie early Saturday when the Greyhounds rallied from being
down 24-21 in the first game against R.A. Long in the semifinal match.
They had little trouble from there, closing out
the match against the fifth-ranked Lumberjills with a 27-25, 25-20, 25-9
victory. Chante Bottineau sparked the offense with 32 assists, and
Raissa Licano had a team-high 14 kills.
"We have some girls who have all been here
before," said LaFever after that match. "Two of them have been in (the
semifinals) before."
Second-ranked Selah had little trouble in its
semifinals against top-ranked Pullman — the defending Class 2A state
champs. The speedy offense was too much for those other Greyhounds as
the Vikings rolled to a 25-12, 25-19, 25-9 victory behind Fickes' 11
kills.
"We are very similar," said Aberle after that
match. "It was like we were playing ourselves. There were a couple
things that helped us — they were step slower and we were a bit more
experienced."
And they had a setter who has no trouble
locating her plethora of options.
