Defending Class 2B state volleyball champion Reardan
staged a repeat performance in the SunDome on Saturday night, beating
regular title-game visitor Colfax in the finals 25-19, 25-23, 25-17.
Behind a strong performance by junior Kelsey Moos, who
had 11 kills and 19 blocks, the Indians beat Colfax for the third time this
season, this time when it counted most.
"It feels amazing," coach Brittney Kubik said. "The
girls just came out and played so well. They played out of their minds."
After knocking off Colfax 3-2 during regular-season
play last month, Reardan swept the Bulldogs last weekend in the district
semifinals. Saturday, Reardan faced Colfax in a place it's called home for
more than a decade.
"It's tough," senior outside hitter Lauren Schulz said
of beating a team three times in one season. "We have to play our hardest
all the time. It took every single one of us out there. I feel like we had
all the pieces, so it was just amazing."
Colfax's history in the state tournament is rich,
including 11 championships, and earning 20 trophies in 26 appearances. But
the Bulldogs finished third last year as Reardan rose from obscurity to the
top.
"Last year, we weren't expecting it as much because we
didn't place here the year before," said Schulz, who totaled nine kills. "So
we came and we won and it was almost like a surprise."
This year was different, though. Reardan was the
favorite.
"In the beginning of the year, when we were talking
about what we wanted our goals to be, one of the biggest things was that we
have a big target on our back," Schulz said. "We knew we needed to play
every game hard and work 10 times harder in practice than we did before."
And they did, sweeping every team in this year's
tournament. Against Colfax, Reardan looked vulnerable only in the second
set, when the Bulldogs took a 5-1 lead. Reardan roared back, going up 12-6
before Colfax battled to build a 23-20 lead that could have changed the tone
of the whole match.
It didn't.
Composed, Reardan scored five straight points to take
the game, stopping a potential Colfax title run.
"I think we felt like we were gonna come out on top,"
Kubik said. "We're trying to build our program and continue the tradition
from the '80s when (Reardan) won like four state championships. We're trying
to instill that now and they are all for it."
